Last summer Sega's CEO and chairman Haruki Satomi apologized for betraying the trust of Sonic fans over the release of some particularly bad games. Since the apology, Sega began restructuring the company to focus more on mobile and PC games.
Apparently, the shift in focus also meant going where no Sonic should go… live-action films. In an interview with The Worldfolio (via Engadget), Satomi has revealed that Sonic the Hedgehog will be getting a live-action animation hyrbid of film:
"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid 'Sonic the Hedgehog' movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."
We have seen a Sonic the Hedgehog film before, in the form of an animated OVA back in 1996. It wasn't awful, in fact, the animation was pretty good. The problem with a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie isn't the 'movie,' it's the 'live-action.'
Then again, this could simply be my fear of being disappointed by Sonic once again talking.
