Sonic Generations Demo Doesn’t Feature Modern Level

Yesterday we reported that Sonic Generations would receive a demo on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The demo was set to feature a classic level and a modern level so that gamers could get a taste of what to expect from the full game. The demo launched today, but it left out the modern level we were hoping to play.

I downloaded the demo a short while ago and played through Green Hill Zone–twice, actually. Halfway through my first run, it immediately dawned on me that this is probably the game fans of the blue blur wanted Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 to be. I liked Sonic 4, but that’s just me. I know a lot of people weren’t fond of the physics and overall level design, and it makes sense given how drastically different they were compared to the classic Sonic games on the Genesis.

Today’s demo showed that Sega does listen to the fans … once in a while. The demo looked like Sonic, sounded like Sonic, and definitely played like Sonic. The graphics were upped considerably, but only enough to make the game look modern. A few visual tricks, such as a slightly tilting camera, were thrown in a few sections, but it shouldn’t be anything to cause a ruckus among Sonic fans of old.

It’s strange that Sega decided to leave out a modern stage in the demo for Sonic Generations. The end result was a quick download that’s fun and promising, yet it leaves a lot of unanswered questions. If you’re interested in the iconic blue hedgehog’s upcoming escapades, be sure to check out the demo on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network before July 12, when the demo expires.
