Succumbing to the pressure from the community comparing the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift, Sony has revealed that the PSVR will not of the same quality as the Oculus. This news should come to the delight of Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey, who stated this not too long ago.
“Their [Sony's] headset isn’t quite as high-end as ours — it’s still, I think, a good headset — and the PlayStation 4 is not nearly as powerful as our recommended spec for a PC,” said Luckey at the time.
The Oculus VR headset being more 'high-end' in comparison to the PSVR shouldn't be a surprise, as both products are targeting a different system and market.
“If you just talk about the high-end quality, yes, I would admit that Oculus may have better VR,” Sony Computer Entertainment vice president Masayasu Ito told Polygon. “However, it requires a very expensive and very fast PC. The biggest advantage for Sony is our headset works with PS4. It’s more for everyday use, so it has to be easy to use and it has to be affordable.
“This is not for the person who uses a high-end PC. It’s for the mass market.”
In comparison to the Oculus Rift's $600 price tag, the rumored cost of the PSVR is $299 for the headset alone and $428 for the headset, as well as all the additional gear.
