Sony Pictures, Square Enix and Hivemind have announced a TV series adaptation of the popular MMO set in the Final Fantasy universe, Final Fantasy 14. Details about the story or airing date are slim but we know that the TV show will be heavily inspired by the MMORPG, its world and characters.
It looks like Final Fantasy is regaining tremendous momentum this year. First we got a massive media-blowout in the past few months about arguably the most-anticipated remake ever. Final Fantasy 7. Then, Square Enix announced the remaster of another classic FF title with Final Fantasy 8. And now, we are greeted by the rather unexpected announcement of a live-action TV series of the Final Fantasy 14 MMORPG. There’s surely little reason for Final Fantasy fans to moan about.
The TV series will be produced by Hivemind. The production company behind Amazon’s The Expanse and Netflix’s The Witcher. Good to learn that the talent behind the Final Fantasy 14 TV show already has experience in creating TV adaptations of video games.
The companies didn’t give detailed info about the cast or story, but we at least know that the series will be based on the world and characters of Final Fantasy 14. So, players of the MMORPG will likely get to see places and people they already know in a whole new light. One character which is definitely going to make an appearance is Cid. The NPC which has been in almost every Final Fantasy game will also be there when the franchise makes the jump to live-action TV.
Final Fantasy 14 launched back in 2010 to rather bad reviews and fan reception, which prompted the publisher to rework pretty much all aspects and re-release it again in 2013 as FF14: A Realm Reborn. This time, fans were happy with the game and thus began a seldom witnessed resurrection of the MMORPG.
