Sony defends decision to block cross-play between PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

When Microsoft announced that Minecraft was getting unified play across Minecraft supporting platforms, Windows 10, iOS, Android, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and VR devices, it was revealed that PlayStation had declined the offer to join in on the cross-platform play.

Now with Rocket League heading to the Nintendo Switch and getting cross-platform play, it was revealed that Sony, once again, had denied cross-play between their platform and the others.

It appears as though Sony isn't regretting their decision to join in on the fun. PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan defended Sony's decision in an interview with Eurogamer, saying that Sony doesn't have a "profound philosophical stance" against cross-play, they are just looking out for their demographic.

"We've got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft – the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it's all ages but it's also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it's something we have to think about very carefully."

Ryan went on to detail that it wasn't a "done deal" across the board, but there are no conversations on PlayStation opening up to cross-play at the moment.
