Gamers hoping to see Electronic Arts' new EA Access service offered on PlayStation consoles, probably shouldn't hold their breath. It doesn't sound like Sony has any plans on working with EA to bring the service to PlayStation anytime soon, based on comments made to Game Informer. According to a Sony representative, EA Access, a service which provides access to EA's catalog of older titles for a small monthly subscription, doesn't "represent good value to the PlayStation gamer."
“We evaluated the EA Access subscription offering and decided that it does not bring the kind of value PlayStation customers have come to expect,” the Sony representative told Game Informer via email.
“PlayStation Plus memberships are up more than 200% since the launch of PlayStation 4, which shows that gamers are looking for memberships that offer a multitude of services, across various devices, for one low price. We don’t think asking our fans to pay an additional $5 a month for this EA-specific program represents good value to the PlayStation gamer.”
When we reached out to EA for comment regarding the service being offered on PlayStation platforms, an EA representative told us this: "As far as other platforms, we have nothing to announce for other platforms at this time."
The EA Access program costs $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year and offers members access to EA's catalog of games (while membership is active) and discounts on newer titles. Members will also be able to download upcoming EA games five days before the release date to play "for a limited time." Since the program is technically in beta right now, only four games are available initially: FIFA 14, Madden NFL 25, Peggle 2 and Battlefield 4, "with more to come in the future."
Can't say that I really mind Sony's decision on this one. PlayStation Plus already offers a great value and I just don't see the point in paying an additional monthly fee for older titles.
