Sony admits that not taking advantage of Demon's Souls was a mistake, They could have had Dark Souls as an exclusive, if they had a little more faith in From Software. Sony tried to rectify that with Bloodborne, which was a critical and sales success, but now From Software is stepping away from the Souls genre it has created.
Enter Koei Tecmo with the new PS4 exclusive Nioh.
The game borrows very heavily from the Souls franchise in terms of difficulty, level design, item types, death mechanics, etc. Except Nioh is also a character action game in the vein of Ninja Gaiden, and makes Bloodborne's faster take on the Souls formula look like correspondence chess in comparison.
It seems Sony isn't going to make the same mistake twice, and has stepped up to publish Nioh in the West, with Team Ninja head Yosuke Hayashi claiming that Sony will "get the game into as many hands as possible." After two wildly successful demos, and with Sony's help, it seems Koei Tecmo's largest production in years is shaping up to be their biggest game ever.
