Sony ‘more focused’ on achieving strong install base with PS4 than prior consoles

As we've learned with the Wii U, achieving a strong install base for a new console early on is imperative. Sure, you have your exceptions — a price cut to the 3DS helped it become one of the better selling systems — but Sony is hoping the PS4 doesn't have to rely on such a move. After all, they are already starting off at $100 cheaper than the Xbox One.

“Achieving a strong install base is always very, very important in a console’s life," Sony Computer Entertainment VP Fegral Gara told OPM. "And we’ll be as focused, if not more focused, on that this time versus any previous generation, in particular starting with an attractive price-point that’s going to help us on that journey."

The lower price point is certainly a good start, especially when you take into account that the PS3 launched at $599. "So we’re delighted we’re looking in good shape on that front," he added.

In comparing the launch of both PlayStation consoles — the PS3 and PS4 — Sony's Jack Tretton also agreed that the company is in a "much better position" with the launch of the PlayStation 4. Last week, he agreed that the price coupled with the timeliness of the PS4's release (closer to the Xbox One when compared to the PS3 and Xbox 360) are a good setup for success.

Will you be getting a PlayStation 4 at launch?
