Sony offers free PS Plus days for PSN downtime

As a "holiday thank you" — or more of an apology, really, for the recent PSN outages — Sony has added five extra days to existing PlayStation Plus members' accounts for free.

According to today's post by Sony Network Entertainment VP Eric Lempel, the offer is extended to all PlayStation Plus members who had an active membership or free trial on December 25th, the day PSN experienced extended downtime as a result of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks by Lizard Squad. PSN experienced widespread outages for a few days, leaving gamers unable to play many of their PlayStation games online.

The extension will be automatically applied to your account should you be eligible, with more information being posted soon about when the extension will become available. However, if your membership or trial ends before the extension is available, you will receive five days of PS Plus to enjoy for free once the extension does become available.

In addition to the free extra time, Sony, sometime this month, will announced that for a limited time they will be offering a 10 percent discount code good for a one-time discount off a total cart purchase in the PlayStation Store. This is a "thank you" to all PSN members, not just PS Plus subscribers. The discount can be used toward just about anything on the PS Store including games, add-ons, season passes, and TV/movies.

"Thanks again to all our loyal PlayStation fans and welcome to our newest console owners. Wishing you all a very happy holiday," Lempel said.
