Sony: Over 5.3 million PS4s sold worldwide since launch

Over 5.3 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold worldwide since its launch in November (as of February 8), Sony announced today. The latest figure comes shortly after the NPD Group's most recent report, in which it was revealed that PS4 console sales doubled that of the Xbox One in the United. What makes the PS4's sales even more impressive is the fact that it's still yet to be released in Sony's home territory of Japan; though, it's set to release this Saturday.

Comparitively, Microsoft has shipped 3.9 million Xbox One consoles to retailers since launch (as of January 23). But remember, consoles shipped isn not the same as units sold to actual consumers. It was actually revelaed that over three million Xbox One consoles were sold to consumers in 2013 (versus the 4.2 million PS4s sold in the same period). Meanwhile, Nintendo has sold just 5.86 million Wii U consoles over a year since the system's release.

Prior to the PlayStation 4's release, Sony's forecast had called for five million consoles sold in the financial year ending March 2014. During the company's most recent earnings call, Sony said PS4 sales are "above expectations." Given the new figure, I'd certainly say so.
