Sony Pictures says Zombieland 2 might still happen

Yes, but when? WHEN?!

A sequel to the 2009 irreverant horror/comedy, Zombieland, has been in development hell since its release seven years ago. While hype around the project has died down significantly now that the careers of stars Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone have skyrocketed since then, plans for a sequel have still been floating around and the possibility for another installment is not officially gone.

Despite their current involvement with the Deadpool franchise, Zombieland writer, Rhett Reese, discussed in a recent interview the plans being made with co-writer, Paul Wernick, and original director, Ruben Fleischer:

"It’s actually still in development at Sony, they’ve had a couple writers take a crack at it, we’re still exec producers and we’re guiding and helping where we can and I think there’s still very much talk about it, but I think it has to be right. I think all the actors and Ruben [Fleischer], all feel like there’s no reason to do it again if we’re not getting it exactly right."

Not only has the script for the film been an issue, but reassembling all four of the original cast members might prove to be the most challenging. There have always been rumors for other A-list actors to make appearances much in the same vein as Bill Murray, more notably were the discussions to bring in Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford, but those plans inevitably fell through. In any case, it seems the project will always be in limbo until the creative team behind it manages to make lightning strike twice, which is really the only way anyone would back ZL2 after all this time.
