Sony: PS4 to be ‘supply-challenged’ for remainder of 2013

The PlayStation 4 got of to a tremendous start, selling over 2.1 million consoles worldwide; however, sales have undoubtedly been hampered by short supply, an issue that Sony is addressing but doesn't think will alleviate until early 2014.

Speaking to The Guardian, Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House acknowledged the PlayStation 4 as "being somewhat supply-challenged for the remainder of the the calendar year." I know that's not exactly what PlayStation fans want to hear five days before Christmas, but on the bright side House noted "Hopefully we'll be able to satisfy that pent-up demand as we get out to January and February."

"The comparative for me is that we sold 3.5m units of PlayStation 3 in our first fiscal year – the launch through to the end of March – and the goal for the PlayStation 4 is to sell at least 5m units in that period," he added.

With over 2.1 million sold (as of December 1st) and demand seemingly nowhere close to subsiding, Sony should have no problem meeting its goal. Earlier this week, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton admitted that Sony's inability to meet the consumer demand is breaking his heart.

"It breaks my heart if somebody’s got $400 in their hand and they want one and we can’t sell them one,” he said earlier this week on the Sony podcast.

As always, GameZone will be sure to keep an eye out for any retailers that get PS4 consoles in stock.
