Sony Q2 FY14: 3.3 million PS4s shipped

Sony's Game & Network Services — the division which houses PlayStation — saw its sales increase 83.2% year-on-year to $2.77 billion, but it wasn't enough to offset the company's other struggling divisions.

Announcing its financial results for Q2 FY14, ended September 30, 2014, Sony revealed an operating loss of $785 million, which resulted in a net loss of $1.247 billion. Sony's sales were actually up 7.2% compared to the same period last year, thanks in part to the strong performance of the PS4 which was boosted by income from its network services.

During the quarter, Sony shipped 3.3 million PS4 consoles, bringing the total up to 13.5 million. Although the PS4 saw a "significant increase" in sales, Sony notes that the division's overall sales were "partially offset" by a decrease in PS3 hardawre and software sales. Combined sales of the PS Vita, PSP, and PlayStation TV — which is part of the handheld segment — also saw a dip in sales, down 100,000 units from the same period last year to 700,000.

Comparatively, Microsoft shipped 2.4 million Xbox consoles — Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined — in the same period.
