As expected, Sony's exclusive PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale was revealed last night. While the reveal on G4TV gave us a good idea of what to expect from Sony's Super Smash Bros.-esque fighter, developer SuperBot Entertainment gave us a little background on the game, along with a premiere trailer.
Aside from being a multiplayer, 2D brawler, SuperBot's game director Omar Kendall describes it as a "celebration of a storied history of great characters and rich worlds brought together in one game."
If it sounds familiar, that's because it's pretty much a close of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros., except for a few slight changes like different levels of supers for each character. That's not to say the game doesn't look great, however. Although the source for the idea is clearly noticable, Sony and SuperBot looks to have a more mature, darker approach to the brawler.
So why bring all of the PlayStation characters together in a similar fighter style game?
"for us at SuperBot, a brawler was the obvious choice for one really good reason: the developers here at SuperBot really like fighting games," Kendall said. "We love playing them and we love making them."
" With PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, we set out to make an experience accessible enough for all PlayStation fans to enjoy while also creating something deep enough for the serious fighting game aficionado. We think this “accessible yet deep” strategy is the perfect way to bring PlayStation fans of all stripes together."
Judging from the trailer, the overall tone of the game looks a lot more serious in this fighter. It goes perfectly with the stigma that PlayStation owners are typically more "hardcore" gamers.
"The game features a number of cool game modes for both single and multiplayer, with a focus on online play which features a robust tournament mode. Players will be able to compete against each other as well as play cooperatively. We can’t wait for you all to try it for yourself."
