Sony reveals minimum connection speed for PlayStation Now

Earlier today, Sony unveiled PlayStation Now, a new service that will allow people to stream PSOne, PS2, and PS3 games to PlayStation 4, Vita, and eventually additional internet-connected devices. Using remote servers, you'll get the most up-to-date version of the game streamed instantly with no downloading, no installing, and no patching. Addressing fans' concerns about their internet speed, Sony took to the comments of the blog to share the recommended internet speed for PlayStation Now.

"We recommend a 5MBPS+ connection," Sony's Matthew Harper told PlayStation fans.

"In our internal tests, users with this bandwidth or greater have been enjoying a low latency, high-quality gaming experience. PS Now tests your connection of each game and optimizes for quality if you are above the minimum requirements," he explained.

"We strive to make the gameplay experience feel as if the game is being played locally on their device – fast and responsive (including for FPS and games with twitch mechanics)."

A closed beta is planned for later this month which Harper says "provide a great opportunity to test the experience with gamers with varying connection speeds," while adding "and our developers will, of course, be working diligently to optimize the service based upon the feedback we receive from the community."

Should your connection speed drop while using PS Now, Sony may "temporarily and adaptively reduce your resolution to maintain a responsive experience."

PlayStation Now will begin a Beta program in the United States at the end of January at which point we should get a better idea of the concept and stability of the service. A full roll-out is expected this summer.
