Sony says PlayStation 5 is aiming to play majority of PS4 library

A couple of days ago, Sony hosted a rather bizarre event for the PlayStation 5. System architect Mark Cerny gave an hour-long presentation, primarily aimed at developers, on what’s going on under the hood of the system. Cerny also noted that most of the top 100 most-played PS4 games will also be playable on PS5 day one.

Fans quickly took to the internet to express frustration and confusion. After all, Microsoft will have all Xbox One games backward compatible as well as a large amount of Xbox 360 and some OG Xbox games on Series X. Many believed Sony had dropped the ball on backward compatibility already but the Japanese company has released a statement to clarify things.

In the statement, Sony said that they’re planning on having the majority of PS4’s 4,000+ game library available on PS5.

“With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5,” said Sony. The company went on to note that they are working with developers to ensure backward compatible games get a boosted performance and are working on a title by title basis to determine what needs tweaking.

As for what Cerny was specifically talking about, it was just to give a small idea of how their efforts are going on PS5.

“In his presentation, Mark Cerny provided a snapshot into the Top 100 most-played PS4 titles, demonstrating how well our backward compatibility efforts are going. We have already tested hundreds of titles and are preparing to test thousands more as we move toward launch. We will provide updates on backward compatibility, along with much more PS5 news, in the months ahead.”

The company is still being hush-hush on what exactly the plans are for PS1 – PS3 backward compatibility. The PlayStation 5 is slated to release this holiday season.
