Sony sells 3.5 million combined PS4 and PS3 consoles in Q1 2014

Sony released today its financial report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2014 revealing a 95.7 percent year-over-year increase in games revenue. For the quarter ended June 30, Sony's Games & Network Services division generated ¥257.5bn ($2.5bn) in sales, which the company attributes to the successful launch of the PS4.

Although Sony didn't disclose specific PS4 and PS3 sales, the company revealed that the consoles combined to sell 3.5 million units in the first quarter. Comparatively, the year-ago quarter saw just 1.1 PlayStation consoles sold. Meanwhile sales of Vita, Vita TV and PSP rose to 750,000, up from last year's 600,000. Combined software sales grew to ¥85bn, up from last year's ¥68bn.

So how is the PS4 stacking up against the Xbox One?

Well, Microsoft posted its financial report for the same period last week, but like Sony the company chose not to reveal specific new-gen sales. Instead, Microsoft also chose to combine the shipping figures for Xbox One and Xbox 360, which totaled 1.1 million for the quarter. That means for the first three months of this financial year, the PlayStation brand is outselling Xbox 3-to-1. I think it can be presumed that the bulk of these sales are PS4 versus Xbox One.
