Sony shuts down Zipper Interactive

Today Sony confirmed their termination of Zipper Interactive, the Seattle-based developer that created the SOCOM series.

Representatives from Sony responded to previous rumors of the company's closing:

The closure is a result of a normal cycle of resource re-alignment within SCE WWS [Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios]. Zipper has completed all work associated with its most recent project, Unit 13 for PlayStation Vita. Zipper titles MAG, SOCOM 4 and Unit 13 will continue to be supported, including the new Daily Challenges in Unit 13.

Zipper Interactive has been in business since 1995 and came under Sony's management in 2006. The company said their goodbyes to fans on their Twitter account this evening: "After 17 years it’s time to head off into the sunset. A sincere thank you to all our fans for everything you've done for us. Farewell."

Unit 13 released for the PlayStation Vita on March 6 to lukewarm reviews.
