Sony to close 20 stores across the United States

In an effort to maintain "competitiveness in an evolving consumer electronics market," Sony has announced it is closing 20 of its 31 U.S.-based stores. The layoffs are in line with Sony's announcement earlier this month that it would reduce its workforce by approximately 5,000 employees worldwide.

"While these moves were extremely tough, they were absolutely necessary to position us in the best possible place for future growth," said Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics. "I am entirely confident in our ability to turn the business around, in achieving our preferred future, and continue building on our flawless commitment to customer loyalty through the complete entertainment experience only Sony can offer."

Sony's two-floor flagship store in New York City will remain open along with the following 10 locations:

Mall Location
Fashion Valley San Diego, CA Retail store
University Town Center San Diego, CA Retail store
South Coast Plaza Costa Mesa, CA Retail store
Stanford Palo Alto, CA Retail store
Roosevelt Field Garden City, NY Retail store
Walt Whitman Huntington Station, NY Retail store
Mall at Millenia Orlando, FL Retail store
Aventura Aventura, FL Retail store
Houston Galleria Houston, TX Retail store
The Americana at Brand Glendale, CA Retail store

You can find the list of 20 stores closing here.

While our hearts go out to those affected by the closings, this is honestly a smart decision by Sony. Sony products are already sold in numerous retail stores throughout the United States, and oftentimes at more affordable prices than the ones offered at the actual Sony store.
