Sony to re-engineer the Vita to make it more affordable

Oh Vita, I had such high hopes for you. It's not like I hate the system, in fact, I love my Vita, but the fact is the world doesn't seem to care for it much. While its sales aren't catastrophic, they are nowhere near what Sony had anticipated.

So it's no surprise that Sony wants the handheld to be a bit more affordable. Rather than taking its current hardware and slashing its price, like Nintendo has done, they instead want to re-engineer the Vita to cut the manufacturing price down as well.

If it worked for Nintendo, surely it might work for Sony as well. Don't expect this to happen anytime soon however. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida stated:

"Of course, cost reduction is one area our engineering team is working on. But we just launched the platform earlier this year. It takes time to do so."

Its current price of $250 for the WiFi model and $300 for the 3G model is a bit steep considering you can get a console these days for a much cheaper price, so making it cheaper is definitely a smart move. Couple that with the fact that Sony is making a big push for Cross-Buy, which means buying a PS3 copy of say Sly Cooper will give you the Vita version free, is a move many fans were hoping for, and it looks like it has finally been answered.
