E3 is often regarded as Christmas for gamers. All the big companies come together to show all of their games, hardware, and more but over the last couple of years, it has died down. Sony strayed away from attending last year as they believed they didn’t have enough to justify taking up stage space but with the impending launch of PlayStation 5, many expected Sony to attend.
Unfortunately, Sony has come out and publicly announced they will not attend the annualized gaming event this summer. The gaming giant revealed they don’t believe that E3 is the proper “venue” for what they’re focused on this year, like the PlayStation 5.
Despite this, Sony will still attend “hundreds” of other consumer events throughout 2020.
“We have great respect for the ESA [the organization behind E3] as an organization, but we do not feel the vision of E3 2020 is the right venue for what we are focused on this year,” said Sony in a statement. “We will build upon our global events strategy in 2020 by participating in hundreds of consumer events across the globe. Our focus is on making sure fans feel part of the PlayStation family and have access to play their favorite content. We have a fantastic line up of titles coming to PlayStation 4, and with the upcoming launch of PlayStation 5, we are truly looking forward to a year of celebration with our fans.”
There’s still no word on when the PlayStation 5 will get a proper reveal but many are anticipating a big event in February, similar to how they revealed PS4 in 2013. Microsoft is still believed to have a significant presence at E3 this year where they will showcase Xbox Series X in its full glory.
While the plans for this E3 haven’t been officially announced, the event seems to be in trouble. As Sony bails out, Kotaku’s Jason Schrier noted on Twitter that E3 is “in the worst shape it’s ever been”. We’ll likely officially hear more about E3’s plans in the next month or so.
PlayStation 5 will release during the holiday season later this year.
