Sophie Turner says X-Men: Dark Phoenix will “revolutionize” superhero films

For X-Men fans, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions seeing their favorite characters on the silver screen. It started out great with X-Men and X2 but then it got really rocky with X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Then we got First Class, The Wolverine, Days of Future Past, and Deadpool and things seemed to be good again! But then Apocalypse came out and made everyone reluctant to get excited for the next mainline film, X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Logan raised a new bar for the series and genre in 2016 thanks to its emotional story and brutal action, showing Fox was willing to take yet another risk like they did with X-Men. Maybe there is hope! Fans are holding on to that hope as they wait for the horror based film The New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix which are both coming in 2018.

Speaking to Empire, Game of Thrones and X-Men actress Sophie Turner talked about how she has had to do a lot of emotional scenes for Dark Phoenix and is hoping this film will hold superhero films to a new high standard.

“I kept saying to Simon, ‘Oh good, that’s done. Now I only have, like seven huge emotional scenes to go,’” she says. “It was a real challenge.”

Turner will reprise her role as Jean Grey who will play a much more pivotal role in this one given how Dark Phoenix is a comic arc centered around Jean Grey as she’s torn between being good or evil. The arc was previously touched on in X-Men: The Last Stand but given the fact that movie is no longer canon, first time director and longtime X-Men writer and producer is taking another stab at it.

“Simon has been the brain behind X-Men for years, and it’s really exciting to have what feels like one of our own rise up and take hold of the franchise, and direct it in the way that he sees it. I have to say he’s one of the best director I’ve ever worked with. He’s so passionate and collaborative.” she said.

Turner also described Dark Phoenix as a “dark, gritty drama” and said that they’re going to be doing something new for the genre. “We are revolutionizing it. We wanted to create a whole new genre of superhero movie.”

We’ll have to see if Sophie Turner’s prophecy comes true when X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on November 2nd, 2018.
