Today is the day. The stars have aligned. Today, Valve has something BIG to announce at GDC, and given the importance of the date — March 3rd at 3:00pm (3/3 at 3!) — it can only mean one thing. Half-Life 3 is getting announced.
Except it isn't. Sorry to burst your bubble, but Valve doesn't have a major announcement to make today. There is no big press conference.
As Kotaku points out, Sergiy Migdalskiy, an engineer at Valve, is actually holding a GDC presentation, but it has nothing to do with Half-Life. Rather, it'll teach attendees the "fundamental elements and practical considerations for using collision detection and physics simulation in games." Yup, definitely not Half-Life.
You hear that? That's the collective sigh of disappointment echoing across the internet. Look, I'm sure Migdalskiy's presentation on physics optimization strategies for game development is interesting for the developers in attendance, but there's only one thing the internet cares about at this point. And it sure as hell isn't another VR headset.
When asked about the rumored press conference, Valve marketing boss Doug Lombardi called it a "big mix up." I'd say…
If you're wondering how such a mix up could happen, look no further than social media, which took a misleading report and ran wild with it.
