Sounds like we’re getting a Game of Thrones movie

Game of Thrones is an amazing show — as evidenced by the 12 awards it took home at the Emmys last week. Every Sunday, fans of the fantasy drama series are glued to their televisions, and now the series' creators have their sights set on an even bigger screen — the movie screen. Speaking to the Daily Star at an after-party, author George R.R. Martin revealed plans for a Game of Thrones movie after the end of season eight.

“There will be a movie but I will not be involved. I have too much to do. That is something HBO and the DB and David are dealing with," Martin said, referring to the show writers David Benioff and DB Weiss, who are one of the few to actually know how the television series will end.

"I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do," Martin continued. “The pressure is on. I am such a slow writer and the fans get upset that I don’t write faster.”

With a Game of Thrones movie pretty much confirmed, the big question now is what will be the focus, or when will it take place? According to a Daily Star "production insider," the film would not necessariliy pick up where the television series left off; it's speculated that the movie could go back in time, perhaps paving the way for older characters previously killed off to return in a prequel story. Of course, this "insider" could just be a previous quote from HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo who previously said the company is "open to anything," including a prequel series as an extension of the franchise.

There's so much backstory the show has barely touched upon, I would love to see it on the big screen — like the how Robert actual became king, taking over for the Mad King Aerys Targaryen (Daenerys' father). Plus it would mean the return of characters that died well before their time — I'm look at you Robb.

George is believed to have books "as long as 1,200" pages about "a raft of other characters." The insider believes some of those could be used "for a completely separate idea and plot." Basically, as the insider says, "the possibilities are endless" for a Game of Thrones movie.
