Southwest Airlines passengers get surprised with free Wii U consoles

Christmas came early to passengers on board a Southwest Airlines flight, as Nintendo gifted each person a free Wii U console. In total, more than 100 passengers on flight 1883 from from New Orleans to Dallas Love Field received a free console after they were greeted upon arrival by Mario. Yes, I'm jealous.

“No one is better than Nintendo and Southwest Airlines at bringing friends, families and fun together,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “As Southwest’s video game partner, our aim is to bring smiles to travelers and Southwest Employees through the fun of Nintendo video games.”

The surprise kicks off a larger partnership between Nintendo and Southwest that will see Wii U Gaming Lounges set up in some of Southwest's most heavily trafficked airports. Between now and December 22, Southwest passengers can pass the time before boarding by playing some of the Wii U's popular games like Super Mario 3D World. Up to four players can play at each game kiosk for free.

Kevin Krone, Southwest Airlines Chief Marketing Officer, added, "Southwest Airlines continues to look for ways to have fun with our Customers and partnering with Nintendo will do just that. Much like Southwest, Nintendo delivers enjoyment and passion and we look forward to bringing the fun to our Customers nationwide.”

In addition to Southwest, Nintendo has expanded its partnership with Norwegian Cruise Line. In all of the ships' atriums and youth and teen centers, travelers can play Wii U consoles.

With Wii U sales struggling, Nintendo is undoubtedly trying to get its console in front of as many eyeballs as possible. With travelers always looking for a way to kill time, the partnership with Southwest and Norwegian will hopefully help boost sales and increase consumer awareness of Nintendo's new console.
