Space RPG by Fallout devs The Outer Worlds is headed to the Switch

Coming sometime after the launch for other systems

Obsidian Entertainment has unveiled that users on the Nintendo Switch will also be able to play their upcoming sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds. The game will not come out day and date with the PC and console versions however and instead a bit later at a yet unannounced date. Watch the announcement trailer for the Switch below.

The Outer Worlds has become sort of an unexpected savior for fans of Bethesda’s and Obsidian’s traditional single-player Fallout RPGs. Despite having a vastly different setting than the post-apocalyptic nuclear wasteland games, the mechanics and designs are ticking every checkbox for fans. A rich, living open-world with various factions, lots of side-content and a focus on player choice are exactly what made the likes of Fallout 3 so popular.

Lost in transit while on a colonist ship bound for the furthest edge of the galaxy, you awake decades later only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy the Halcyon colony. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

There’s more than the game’s design however. The team behind The Outer Worlds are the same people who created the fan-favourite Fallout: New Vegas. And with the rather ho-hum reception of the co-op multiplayer Fallout 76, naturally, expectations are pretty high. With today’s unexpected news that with the Nintendo Switch, the last dedicated gaming platform will also receive the game, at least no gamer will be left in the dust in experiencing the spiritual successor to Fallout: New Vegas.

Sadly, today’s trailer does not feature any real gameplay from the Switch. Instead we are just presented with an Obsidian Producer giving an overview of their game with info we already know. It’ll be interesting to see how the handheld version of The Outer Worlds will compare to the much more powerful consoles and PC.

While we didn’t get any concrete release date for the Switch version, we hope that the wait won’t be too long. The Outer Worlds for PC, PS4 and Xbox One will come out on October 25th.
