After years of fans pleading and studio negotiations, Spider-Man finally ended up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe alongside Iron Man, Captain America, and many other legendary heroes. Later this year, Spider-Man will make his second appearance in the MCU in his first standalone movie titled Spider-Man: Homecoming. This is all happening due to the fact that Sony (the company that owns the movie rights to Spider-Man) made a deal with Marvel to let them make movies with him, but Sony still makes money off of it.
Sadly, it sounds like Spider-Man could exit the MCU after the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel set to release in 2019. Producer Amy Pascal stated that the deal between Sony and Marvel ends after the release of the sequel which means Sony could take the character back to make 100% profit instead of splitting the money with Marvel.
“One of the things that I think is so amazing about this experience is that you don’t have studios deciding to work together to make a film very often,” she explained. “In fact it may never happen again, after we do the sequel. Because Sony, and Disney, and Marvel all decided that the right thing to do was to allow Peter Parker and Spider-Man to be in the MCU and to work with the Marvel guys and have them produce this film.”
Of course, the two studios could come to an agreement and continue their partnership but it all depends on how these next couple Spider-Man movies turn out financially and critically. Spider-Man will appear alongside Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War (May 2018), the untitled Infinity War sequel, and the untitled Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel which both release in 2019.
If Sony does take Spider-Man back, it's possibly they may try to use him in the Venom spin-off series Sony is setting up which doesn't take place in the MCU. Who knows?!
In related news, Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts recently spoke in an interview about the film and described the movie's tone as "unique" and "surprising". Do you want to see Spider-Man continue to be a part of the MCU or would you want to see him go back to Sony? Let us know in the comments below.
