Tonight we will get our first look at the highly anticipated superhero film, Spider-Man: Homecoming. The movie will mark the first solo outing for the character under the control of Marvel and will be the third reboot for the character. Although the plot is still somewhat of a mystery, we know it'll follow Peter Parker through high school as he balances his life as a superhero fighting villains like Vulture.
To gear up for the new trailer, some of the cast and crew of the film sat down in an interview with USA Today to discuss more about the movie. One thing people are really curious about is how Michael Keaton's Vulture will be handled. In the comics, he's a senile old man who wears a massive green suit with wings. He looks pretty goofy and isn't superimposing, which could make it challenging to make a viewer feel like he's any threat to Spider-Man. Peter Parker himself, Tom Holland, says this won't be the case.
“The first time we see the Vulture is terrifying. It’s like a horror movie: really scary, very intense and shocking." Holland teased. In Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, the director used many horror techniques that he picked up while making films like The Evil Dead to give villains a much more threatening vibe. In Spider-Man 2, there's an entire scene showing just how evil and powerful Dock Ock is as he kills an entire room of doctors trying to surgically remove his sentient limbs.
Director Jon Watts went on to talk about why he picked the villain, despite him being just a regular guy with wings.
"The Spidey foe is different than other Marvel baddies such as Thanos and Ultron, Watts says. “It’s fun to think that if Spider-Man is a regular kid who becomes a superhero, there’s got to be a bunch of regular guys who become supervillains, too.”
Co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll also detailed how Peter is feeling after his debut in Captain America: Civil War which saw him teaming up with some of the most famous characters in the world.
“He literally just went to Europe with the coolest clique of them all, and now he’s back with the academic decathalon and the mathletes and going, ‘What am I doing here?’”
Holland added that Peter won't be perfect as he's still learning how to balance his responsibilities and impress his mentor, Tony Stark.
“This is really a movie where Spider-Man’s not the finished article. He really does learn and he makes massive mistakes. It’s nice to see a kid do that and then try to rectify those mistakes.”
Spider-Man: Homecoming looks to truly differentiate itself from previous on-screen iterations of the character as the film features a very diverse cast, it's not going to repeat his origin story, and according to Holland, the character won't throw any punches.
The first trailer for the film debuts tonight on Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC, we will be sure to post the trailer here on GameZone when it's available online. Spider-Man: Homecoming will hit theaters July 7th, 2017.
