The other day at Sony’s big PS5 event, they revealed a brand new Spider-Man game from Insomniac. Spider-Man: Miles Morales places you in the shoes of the *other* web-slinger after the events of the first game.
Given the quick turn around (Marvel’s Spider-Man released in 2018), many assumed this must be more of a spin-off than a full sequel. After all, the first game’s post-credit scene also teased a major plot point for the sequel that would really only make sense if Peter Parker was the protagonist. That said, Sony has cleared up the fact that it’s not a full-fledged sequel.
In an interview with The Telegraph (via VGC), Sony VP head of European Business, Simon Rutter explained that the game is apparently a remaster of the original with a Miles Morales expansion.
“I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game. There’s a substantial Miles Morales component – which is the expansion element – but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.”
So… apparently we might also be getting the original game on top of the new Miles Morales story. It’s a bit confusing as that wasn’t particularly indicated in the initial reveal trailer. Sony issued the following statement when contacted for clarification:
“Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the next adventure in Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. We will reveal more about this standalone game at a future date.”
In the meantime, no matter what shape it takes, Spider-Man: Miles Morales will launch on PS5 this holiday season.
