Many years ago, Sony announced plans for a Spider-Man cinematic universe following the success of Marvel’s multi-billion dollar film franchise. Before The Amazing Spider-Man movies underperformed and Sony made a deal with Marvel to allow the web-slinger to hang out with The Avengers, there were plans for various spin-offs surrounding The Sinister Six, Venom, and much more. These would’ve all been sandwiched between core entries in The Amazing Spider-Man series but that ultimately didn’t pan out.
Most of these movies were scrapped completely but one that just wouldn’t stay dead was the Venom film. The movie centered around arguably Spidey’s biggest foe has been in the works for years with various writers penning scripts but this year, Sony cast The Dark Knight Rises and Dunkirk star Tom Hardy in the role of the titular character. It became clear that the studio was truly determined to make this film despite people believing it was never going to happen.
Sony also revealed that the movie would be releasing in October of 2018 and well, it looks like that’s actually going to happen as they started filming earlier this week. The official social media account for the film tweeted out a picture from the set confirming that the movie is underway and will likely hit its scheduled release date.
Venom has been labeled as a sci-fi horror film meaning this could potentially snag an R-rating after seeing the incredible success of movies like Deadpool and Logan. Rumors report that Carnage, another Spider-Man baddie who is a much more evil version of Venom, is in the movie but official plot details are currently unknown. There have been hints that Tom Holland’s Spider-Man may show up at some point in the movie but Sony has denied it but this could be intentional misdirection so it’s a surprise when he does pop in.
Venom is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4th, 2018.
