Splatoon's North American commercials started with the fairly grating "Squid Kid" commercials. They were poorly received and heavily mocked. Luckily for Nintendo though, the sheer awfulness became memetic and went viral. You can hardly argue with the results, as it lead to millions of views on video sites, with the new squid-kid community embracing the commercial's particular brand of bad:
Now Nintendo has stepped up its commercial game with a pair of spots that highlight updated content and point out that more is coming. There's no grating squid or kid singing here, just fun gameplay, a real announcer, and the foretelling of new content that will still be coming.as summer wraps up.
Unfortunately, the sad truth is that we are all squids and kids now. This much better wave of commercials likely won't spread as much because the internet doesn't have anything to latch onto. They're neither super hype inducing, nor are they "so bad it's good" like the previous spots. They're just good commercials.
