Springfield, Illinois’ Mayor just gave Cobra Commander the key to the city

When it comes to being a "real American hero," you can probably scratch Springfield, Illinois Mayor J. Michael Houston off the list, as he just gave Cobra Commander, leader of the worldwide terrorist organization known as Cobra, a key to the city.

In a humorous press release sent out today, it was noted that the cobalt-clad commander-in-chief gave an "eloquent and moving speech" in which the terrorist leader shared "Cobra's vision of the future and its goals to bring about a better tomorrow for all those who support their cause."

“Springfielders near and far, I accept your Mayor’s generous gift. And let it be known that I too bring a gift for every man, woman and child of this city that is so near and dear to my heart; an invitation to join with me," said Cobra Commander. "Join Cobra!"

In all seriousness, the gift of the key to the city was a publicity stunt to promote the city's hosting of G.I. JoeCon, the G.I. Joe Collectors' Convention which will be held in Springfield next month from April 9-12. But if you're wondering why the key was given to Cobra Commander and not, say, Hawk — the field commander of the G.I. Joe team — it's because Springfield actually housed a secret Cobra base  in the original cartoon which played a pivotal role in the history of conflict between G.I. Joe and Cobra.

Those in attendance at G.I. JoeCon can participate in a number of activities including autograph sessions with G.I. Joe voice actors, panels and seminars with Hasbro, the G.I. Joe Collectors’ Club, and many of the other special guests, a G.I. Joe parachute drop as well as entry to the largest G.I. Joe centric showroom in the world featuring thousands of G.I. Joe toys and custom G.I Joe vehicles.
