Standalone Han Solo film directors exit Star Wars project due to creative differences

UPDATE: A writer from The Hollywood Reporter claims that there is only three weeks left on the Han Solo shoot.

Earlier this year, production began on the untitled standalone Han Solo film that will release in 2018. While details have been scarce on the project, we’ve gotten a glimpse at the movie via some set photos and have a general idea of where in Han Solo’s life the movie will take place.

Today, it was revealed via The Hollywood Reporter that the two directors of the film, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be departing the prequel film due to creative differences between the directors and Lucasfilm/Disney.

This news is a bit concerning due to the fact that the movie should be deep into principal photography at this point and they’re still having decisions made on the creative front. Usually, these things happen prior to a movie going into production but this is very different. It’s currently unclear how this will affect the film.

Both parties commented on the matter stating that a new director will be coming onto the project soon and that they’re proud of what they were able to create while on the project.

“Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm in a statement.

“Unfortunately, our vision and process weren’t aligned with our partners on this project. We normally aren’t fans of the phrase ‘creative differences’ but for once this cliché is true. We are really proud of the amazing and world-class work of our cast and crew,” stated Lord and Miller.

The untitled Han Solo film is due out next summer and will star Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian while Emilia Clarke and Woody Harrelson will be starring in currently unknown roles.
