The never-ending tale that is Star Citizen has experienced its next chapter but this time it’s not that positive. After years upon years of waiting, outrage from the player base in regard to especially the single-player portion of the game – Squadron 42 – has culminated in Cloud Imperium Games releasing an official statement about the matter.
It has been an agonizing eight years since Star Citizen wowed the gaming masses with its incredibly ambitious scope and promise of delivering a next-gen space-exploration experience. An actual console generation has come and is soon fading away with the game still not being out. So much for next-gen. Indeed, while the game still looks mighty impressive these days, the initial wow factor has faded somewhat with the game seemingly stuck in development for all eternity.
We’ve certainly communicated the delays and the reasons for it, and have even had Brian Chambers relay the news initially, with our CMs repeating that message when the topic cropped up multiple times. We’ve had to do that a couple of times over the past weeks. And unfortunately, the plain truth was always the same: The initial video didn’t meet our standards and we are redoing it. We didn’t get into such details as sick personnel nor did we explicitly spell out that the video footage couldn’t leapfrog actual dev work in our priority list. After all, we don’t like to make excuses. But it’s clear that the confluence of the prolonged delay to the Briefing Room and the lack of any new information (because there was none) created angst within the community.
But that’s only what you might believe if you only go by disgruntled backers. It’s absolutely true, the development period is atrociously long and the communication from the developer could be better, especially in regard to concrete release dates.
Fans of Star Citizen have shown an unprecedented amount of patience and trust in Chris Roberts and Cloud Imperium Games but it looks like the tides are slowly turning. The new statement by the developer isn’t really looking like it’ll solve it either as it only promises to share a better roadmap in the future.
No details about Squadron 42’s long-awaited and delayed beta have been shared. It looks like fans of the game will have to resort once again to the waiting game.
