Star Citizen exceeds $20 million in crowdfunding

PC space sim Star Citizen has surpassed the $20 million mark in crowdfunding, Cloud Imperium Games announced today.

That progress took less than a year, with $10 million of it coming from the past four-and-a-half months.

"It’s especially fitting to me that we reach this goal today, on the anniversary of the release of the original Wing Commander," wrote game director Chris Roberts in a post. "Thanks to the support of this incredible community, Star Citizen embodies everything I dreamed of doing with that series, and opens up the potential for so much more."

The $20 million unlocks the stretch goal for first-person combat on select lawless planets. Cloud Imperium also rewarded the community with a fish tank decoration for their hangar.

The developer plans to unveil more new ships, the anticipated dogfighting module, and other updates in the coming months, along with some surprises on October 10, the one-year anniversary of the game's reveal.

A whopping 87 percent of the game's community wants the funding counter to continue after $21 million. The developer announced that at $22 million, it will bring in a facial capture system to create more realistic characters.

Star Citizen enjoyed a successful Kickstarter with over $2 million pledged. Subsequent donations have been made through Cloud Imperium's website.
