Star Trek: Discovery officially delayed until May 2017

Lay down your phasers, Trekkies, Star Trek: Discovery is going to be missing its targeted release window of January 2017. In an official statement on the Star Trek website, the team detailed plans to delay the all new live-action TV series until May 2017, buying the show an extra five months for development.

Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller released a joint statement on the matter and had this to say:

"Bringing Star Trek back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood.

We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality. Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: Star Trek deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of."

The Star Trek TV series was originally revealed back in November 2015 and is set to be one solid story taking place across 13 episodes. While this isn't a terribly different formula for most modern dramas these days, it is a dramatic departure from the previous entries in the series which were predominantly made up of segmented stories across 25 (ish) episodes. Star Trek: Discovery will premiere on primetime on CBS for the first episode before releasing concurrently on CBS All Access and Netflix.
