Star Wars director J.J. Abrams opens game studio called ‘Bad Robot Games’

J.J. Abrams is one of the biggest names in Hollywood right now. Not only has he helmed both Star Wars and Star Trek films, created massive TV shows like Lost, and produced films like Cloverfield but he has been helping develop film adaptations of Portal and Half-Life for a while.

Every now and then he’ll give us an update on them but he’s been quiet on that front for a bit, he’s a busy man so we can’t blame him for getting sidetracked with upcoming projects like Star Wars: Episode IX. Despite his busyness in the film industry and committing to bringing some video game properties over, he has now fully invested in the games industry by opening a game studio under his Bad Robot banner.

The studio dubbed as Bad Robot Games will have a partnership with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Chinese media company Tencent who is the biggest gaming related company in the world in terms of revenue and market value which. The partnership with Tencent will allow any games made by Bad Robot Games to have a massive reach in Asian markets. Tencent has helped games like PUBG reach massive heights in China and continues to pour their resources into their partners to help the games they invest in strive.

Dave Baronoff will lead the Bad Robot’s new gaming-centric studio which will partner with established developers and also consist of in-house writers, artists, and designers at Bad Robot to develop console, PC, and mobile games. Baronoff has been helping develop Bad Robot-related entertainment projects since 2006 and will continue to steer the ship as they expand.

“I’m a massive games fan, and increasingly envious of the amazing tools developers get to work with, and the worlds they get to play in. Now we are doubling down on our commitment to the space with a unique co-development approach to game making that allows us to focus on what we do best, and hopefully be a meaningful multiplier to our developer partners,” said J.J. Abrams. “Dave’s creativity, deep passion and skillful leadership will be incredibly valuable as we harness our partner Tencent’s expertise, experience and reach to bring our games to audiences around the world.”

It’ll likely be a while before we see what Abrams and Bad Robot Games is cooking up but whatever it is, it’ll likely be incredibly exciting as the studio is filled with some of the most creative minds out there.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on any projects announced and released by Bad Robot Games in the future.
