Star Wars exposure sparks tourism success for Skellig Michael

The end-scene setting of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is quickly becoming one of the biggest attractions in Dublin, Ireland as fans arrive in numbers, and one local trader seems pretty happy.

Gerard Kennedy currently runs the Moorings guest house and Bridge Bar in Portmagee, offering a "Star Wars experience" package for fans and tourists.

This deal includes not only a two-night accommodation but offers fans a chance to understand the story behind the filming that took place in the area – all for $160. There's also Star Wars inspired t-shirts that can be bought on-site, featuring the slogan: "May the Craic be with you."

Star Wars fans aren't just enjoying the filming stories too, with Kennedy seemingly happy about their interest in the area's history: "When they come, all they talk about is ‘Star Wars, when they come back, all they are talking about is Skellig and the monastery," he said.

Although it's hard to see past this success story, as it were, Star Wars' success could spark some difficulties for the area.

There is currently a 15,000 person cap (per year) on people visiting the island, for safety and conservation reasons. In 2009 it was reported that two American tourists fell to their death as they attempted to reach the ruins of the monastery.

The trip to the Monastery involves around 660 steps – as Daisy Ridley knows all too well – and boat trips to the island are only available in October and May.

This could cause a dilemma for the area, will they bow to tourism while the film is still hot?.. or do they stick to their guns and protect this national treasure?

Only time will tell.
