Star Wars is one of the most beloved IPs out there. It has great movies, shows, books, and of course, games. Sadly though, we haven’t gotten a really solid single-player Star Wars game in about a decade. Respawn’s Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order looks to change that.
Set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, players will fill the shoes of a force sensitive man named Cal. After an event causes him to expose himself as a force wielder, the Empire hunts him down in an attempt to contain the Jedi. Prior to today, we hadn’t seen any gameplay but now we have a meaty look at the game via a 15-minute demo at EA’s E3 event, EA Play.
The demo shows Cal going to the Wookie planet of Kashyyyk where he encounters a variety of Imperial soldiers. The most interesting thing about the gameplay is that it’s not a hack and slash game like Force Unleashed, there’s a lot more thought put into combat. You’re blocking, countering, using precise blows, combining force powers, and taking it a bit slower.
The best way to compare it is the lightsaber combat of the original trilogy as opposed to the really fast, flashy nature of the prequels. It’s still engaging but it’s a lot more thoughtful.
Some of the other mechanics we see feel very Uncharted-esque with climbing and swinging from vines/ropes. The movement also includes a fan-favorite feature from Respawn’s Titanfall series via wall-running which allows you to move across long walls and move over gaps.
We also see how adept with the force Cal is. He’s able to freeze people and laser bolts in place (a la the way Kylo Ren does it in Star Wars: The Force Awakens), he can then use it to attack the enemy while they’re vulnerable or clear out other enemies. If you’re really creative, you can freeze a laser bolt in the air and pull an enemy in front of it, unfreeze the bolt and kill them with it.
There will be plenty more of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at Xbox’s E3 conference tomorrow afternoon.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will release on Xbox One, PS4, and PC this November.
