The push for a standalone Obi-Wan Kenobi Star Wars spinoff film continues as Rogue One director, Gareth Edwards is now backing the idea.
During an interview with Fandango, Edwards says he wants to see more films from a certain Star Wars time period about everyone’s favorite master Jedi.
“To be honest, Rogue One is the period I love,” said Edwards. “It’s connecting to the original New Hope. If someone made other films in that era – and I don’t necessarily think this is happening, I have no inside knowledge – but that desire to see Obi-Wan Kenobi. Tattooine, basically, I love. As a kid I remember wanting to grow up there; anything in that ‘Original Trilogy’ era I am just besotted with, and it’s just like going back home to your childhood.”
There is certainly A LOT of interest in getting more Obi-Wan Kenobi on film, especially when it comes to his travels on Tattooine — and we also know Ewan McGregor is open to playing Obi-Wan again. He lent his voice to deliver a line in The Force Awakens as Obi-Wan, and McGregor himself expressed interest in continuing to tell Kenobi’s story from when we last saw him in Episode III.
But if we were betting people, don’t expect an Obi-Wan film to happen anytime soon. We’ll most likely have to wait until Episode IX is completed in 2019 before we can get a Kenobi standalone film.
Fingers crossed.
