Post-credit teasers for upcoming movies are nothing new for many movie-goers, especially those who follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But for Star Wars, it's unheard of. Of course, now that Star Wars is in the hands of Disney (who also owns Marvel, by the way), it's not only possible, but also rumored that we'll be getting a post-credit teaser with Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
According to Schmoes Know's "trusted sources" there will be a small clip at the end of The Force Awakens teasing the first of Lucasfilm's new Anthology films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
While just a rumor for now, it's completely plausible. It may break tradition of all previous Star Wars Episodes, but post-credit teasers are insanely popular for comic book movies, as they often fuel the hype train for the following movie. With not much known about Rogue One, aside from a basic premise and single cast photo, I wouldn't be surprised to see Disney and Lucasfilm try to raise some awareness for mysterious spin-off film.
Sure, Rogue One benefits from the Star Wars brand in its name, but remember, it's not part of the core saga or new trilogy. It's a spin-off, set before the events of A New Hope. As explained by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, Rogue One "will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to theStar Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know."
Even with a plot related to A New Hope, there will likely be some trepidation — especially given the jarring cast photo which suggests a shift in tone from what we've seen in Star Wars. Fans will already be coming in droves to see the new trilogy. But a spin-off? Why not expose that audience to one of new spin-offs and protect that four billion dollar investment?
