Star Wars: The Force Awakens ditches Midi-Chlorians

There will be no mention of Midi-Chlorians in the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens, movie director J.J. Abrams confirmed.

When asked during the red carpet event of Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation if the intelligent microscopic life forms that lived symbiotically inside the cells of all living would be mentioned in the film, Abrams responded with a simple "No."

J.J., are you an angel?

Midi-chlorians were first introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace as a way to explain the connection the Jedi have to the Force. Needless to say, the convoluted attempt an explanation didn't resonate well with fans, particularly those of the original trilogy. Then again, a lot of the prequel trilogy didn't resonate well with fans.

As the question was asked in a joking environment, Abrams short answer only addresses if they will be mentioned in the film, not if he's abandoning the concept entirely.

With a few months left until Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters on December 18, 2015, there's still plenty of mystery surrounding the highly anticipated film. At least we can rest easy knowing Midi-Chlorians won't ruin our experience. Again, this is just another clear example of how Abrams is returning to the roots of the Star Wars franchise, beyond just the use of more practical effects and original cast.

The next trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is scheduled to release in Fall 2015.
