Star Wars: The Force Awakens sinks Titanic at the domestic box office

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been breaking all sorts of records since blasting into theaters in mid-December, and now the J.J. Abrams-directed film has its sights set on another. The Force Awakens has surpassed Titanic to become the second-highest grossing domestic film of all time, and now trails only James Cameron's Avatar for the record.

Box Office Mojo, which reports box office totals for the majority of films across the globe, currently has The Force Awakens hovering around $740 million in the U.S. (Walt Disney Studios reports $685.4 million as of Friday), putting it well within Avatar's current record which is slightly over $760 million.

The Force Awakens is the 7th installment in the core Star Wars saga, and is set 30 years after the end of Return of the Jedi. Despite some flaws, The Force Awakens has been mostly well-received by fans and critics alike.
