At the end of 2016, we tragically lost Carrie Fisher who was featured in 2015's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. This naturally brought up the question of how the new Star Wars films would proceed. It was already promised that Leia would not be recreated with CGI like the magic used in Star Wars: Rogue One. But filming for The Last Jedi had apparently progressed far enough to have Fisher's presence throughout the film without alteration.
Hollywood Reporter talked with Disney CEO Bob Iger about her role in the film. He states that her role remains unchanged, "Her performance remains as it is in Episode 8."
He goes on to confirm the promise of not digitally recreating her. “In Rogue One, we had some digital characters. We are not doing that with Carrie."
Inevitably, Leia wouldn't appear in Episode 9, so this asks the question of what happens to her in The Last Jedi.
