Developer Chucklefish’s 2D sandbox RPG, Starbound, entered Steam’s Early Access program in 2013. Today, the game is readying itself for its official launch: update 1.0.
A release date has yet to be nailed down, but Chucklefish did unveil the game’s new and returning features in a recent blog post, which is quite the laundry list. Here’s a summary of update 1.0:
- The official story will gain eight instanced missions tied to quests hidden in the Starbound sandbox
- Mission/story, ship, armor and colony progression will be “entirely separate”
- Planets will contain multiple biomes apiece, with “many more possibilities for variation and interesting content”
- New dungeons, villages and side quests will also be added, along with a “generated quest system”
- In addition to upgrading ships and outposts, players may also hire crew members and mercenaries
- Simplified crafting system complete with a suite of new equipment to create
- Drop in/drop out multiplayer on top of dedicated multiplayer servers
- Miscellaneous improvements to combat, pets and survival mode
