Starbound update 1.0 patch notes revealed ahead of official launch

Three years in the making

Developer Chucklefish’s 2D sandbox RPG, Starbound, entered Steam’s Early Access program in 2013. Today, the game is readying itself for its official launch: update 1.0.

A release date has yet to be nailed down, but Chucklefish did unveil the game’s new and returning features in a recent blog post, which is quite the laundry list. Here’s a summary of update 1.0:

  • The official story will gain eight instanced missions tied to quests hidden in the Starbound sandbox
  • Mission/story, ship, armor and colony progression will be “entirely separate”
  • Planets will contain multiple biomes apiece, with “many more possibilities for variation and interesting content”
  • New dungeons, villages and side quests will also be added, along with a “generated quest system”
  • In addition to upgrading ships and outposts, players may also hire crew members and mercenaries
  • Simplified crafting system complete with a suite of new equipment to create
  • Drop in/drop out multiplayer on top of dedicated multiplayer servers
  • Miscellaneous improvements to combat, pets and survival mode
