StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, the highly-anticipated expansion to StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty, is set to release some time in the first half of 2013. The announcement came during Activision Blizzard's Q3 2012 financial earnings call where Blizzard also revealed that StarCraft 2: Wings of Liberty has sold 6 million units to date.
StarCraft 2 was split into three installments: the base game which released on July 27, 2010, was subtitled Wings of Liberty and focused primarily on the Terran campaign. Two expansions — Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void — are planned and will explore more of the Zerg and Protoss races.
With the base game already released, Heart of the Swarm will introduce new units and mechanics for the Protoss, Zerg, and Terran armies. The multiplayer portion of the game is currently in closed beta testing. As for the single-player campaign, it will focus primarily on Kerrigan and the Zerg.
In other Blizzard news, the studio also revealed an expansion is being planned for Diablo 3.
