StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm released over a week ago, but Blizzard is just now reporting the game's sales numbers. Sorry if it comes a little late, they had quite a bit to tally. Heart of the Swarm has sold through approximately 1.1 million copies worldwide — retail and digital sales included — in just the first two days of its release. In comparison, SimCity — another PC exclusive — sold about the same amount in two weeks. Although, SimCity's reports don't include pre-order sales; we've reached out to Blizzard to see if theirs does.
"We want to thank the global StarCraft community for the incredible passion and support they've shown for Heart of the Swarm," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment. "In addition to a brand-new single-player campaign, we added a ton of enhancements with this expansion to make StarCraft 2 even more fun to play, and more exciting to watch. We're pleased to see gamers and eSports fans around the world enjoying Heart of the Swarm."
Additionally, more than 1.1 million viewers tuned in to watch the Heart of the Swarm MLG Winter Championship tournament last weekend. Peak concurrent viewership reached 157,000 viewers, according to Twitch.
"StarCraft 2 has been a premier game at Major League Gaming events since Wings of Liberty was released," added Sundance DiGiovanni, CEO of Major League Gaming. "Heart of the Swarm has generated even more excitement, and we're all looking forward to what the future brings for StarCraft 2 eSports."
StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm has received great praise since its launch, including a score of 9.5/10 here on GameZone. Its sales alone prove PC gaming is far from dead and that Blizzard remains a dominant force in the real-time strategy genre.
