State of Play announced for this Thursday, Focus on PS4 & VR games

Third-Party will be the focus

Sony has shared that an upcoming State of Play is taking part this Thursday. But keep your expectations in check because this one will be focused entirely on their current-gen PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. That doesn’t mean there’ll be no next-gen news though.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hype train towards the start of a new console generation and only wanting to hear about mouthwatering games for that. But the truth is, we’re still months away from the elusive holiday launch window for the PS5 and Xbox Series X. And the world isn’t standing still until then, nor will everyone upgrade immediately.

With a massive install base of over 100m consoles, the PlayStation 4 still reigns supreme as the place to play. Sony has now dedicated an entire State of Play event for owners of a PS4. Not only can you look forward to upcoming games for it but also titles for the PSVR virtual reality device.

And just to be super clear — there will be no PlayStation Studios updates in Thursday’s episode. There won’t be any updates around hardware, business, preorders, or dates either. On Thursday, our focus is squarely on showcasing some cool upcoming games coming to the broader PlayStation ecosystem. Should be fun!

Sony is smart to be very clear what to expect with the show, hence the surprisingly short time between announcement and the event. Still, Sony has clarified that while there definitely won’t be any major PS5 announcements during the show, there will be updates on some of the PS5 games shown in the recent ‘Future of Gaming’ PS5 event.

And in case eager viewers were hoping for a release date or even pricing for the PS, Sony outright stated that won’t be the case. This week’s show will be all about third-party PS4 & PSVR games. So, keep your expectations in check.
