Developer Frozenbyte, best known as the creator of the Trine trilogy, today unveiled the PS4 version of Shadwen, the studio’s upcoming stealth-action title.
“Shadwen is an explosive stealth game where the only rule is to remain unseen at all times,” Frozenbyte’s Kai Tuovinen said on the PlayStation Blog. “If you get caught, it’s game over. Luckily, there are a bunch of gameplay mechanics that make this a lot of fun. For starters, time only moves when you’re moving, so you have ample time to plan your moves, even in mid-air.
“Second, should you make a mistake or wish to try some maneuver (a kill for example) in a different way, you can instantly rewind time and try again!”
Trine’s organic platforming was clearly a major influence on Shadwen’s stealth system, especially the grappling hook brandished by titular protagonist Shadwen. The DNA of time-bending shooter Superhot, which popularized the mechanic of syncing time to player movement, can also be seen.
Shadwen also features a moral choice system rooted in lethal and non-lethal tactics. How you approach situations will affect the outcome of the story, and, presumably, the mentality of Lily, the young orphan girl you spend the game with.
Frozenbyte is “targeting” a May launch for Shadwen on PS4, but has not yet confirmed an official release date.
