Steam Community Market expands user economy

Valve's new Steam Community Market provides users with a new way to benefit from their in-game items.

This expansion to Steam's PC and Mac gaming service allows players to buy and sell in-game items in exchange for Steam Wallet funds. The Community Market is currently in beta with Valve's own first-person shooter Team Fortress 2. It will be available for other titles starting next year.

The current Steam trading system lets players swap Steam game gifts as well as some in-game items, such as those from Team Fortress 2, Spiral Knights, and Portal 2. Users make more than 500,000 trades per week, according to Valve's software engineer Tony Paloma.
